New Delhi: Japan has suspended all mango imports fromIndia after 20 years, disrupting what was shaping up to be a busy summer export season for premium
varieties like Alphonso, Kesar, Langra, and Banganapalli.
The sudden halt comes after Japanese quarantine inspectors flagged major loopholes in pest-control procedures at an Indian treatment facility during a routine check earlier this year. The ban is because Japan maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy against invasive pests like fruit flies to protect its own farms and any gap in safety protocols triggers an immediate shutdown.
This is the first time in nearly two decades that India’s king of fruits has faced such a restriction in Japan. The country had previously enforced a similar ban over fruit fly concerns which was only lifted in 2006 after India upgraded its sanitisation systems.
Why ban again after 20 years?
The trouble started in March during a pre-season inspection at a Vapour Heat Treatment (VHT) facility in Rehmanpur, Uttar Pradesh. These specialised VHT centres are supposed to clear the fruit using hot, humid air to kill any hidden pest larvae without using chemicals.
However, inspectors from the Yokohama Plant Protection Association found noticeable deficiencies in the disinfection and fumigation setups. While neither government has detailed the exact technical glitches, Japan acted swiftly, announcing that any Indian mango shipments with certificates issued after March 25, 2026 would be rejected at their ports.
Double blow for struggling Indian farmers
While Japan isn’t India’s largest volume market, but still ban is a massive financial blow to traders because the Japanese consumers pay premium prices for top-tier fruit. To make the matter even worse, the timing couldn’t be worse for local growers, particularly in Maharashtra’s famous Alphonso belt.
The farmers in the state are already reeling under immense pressure with extreme heatwaves and erratic weather linked to El Niño, wiping out up to 85-90 per cent of crops in some pockets.
Singapore steps in as demand pivots
Interestingly, while Japan has shut its doors, Singapore is having a massivemango-buying spree from India. The Singapore High Commission in India recently shared on X (formerly Twitter) that premium Indian varieties are flying off supermarket shelves there, describing the current demand as an absolute craze.
India remains the world’s largest mango producer, churning out nearly 28 million metric tonnes annually. Even with the Japanese setback, global demand remains incredibly high elsewhere. For context, data from APEDA shows that India exported over 12,897 metric tons of mangoes worth $20 million to the UAE alone in 2024 with countries like the US, the UK, Qatar, and Kuwait continuing to buy in massive quantities.
