New Delhi: India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India is stepping up its clean energy commitments, announcing plans to invest Rs 925 crore in green energy initiatives
by FY 2030-31. As part of this broader capital allocation, the company will invest Rs 150 crore specifically into two flagship biogas projects as an immediate priority, signaling a major push to reduce dependence on fossil fuels across its manufacturing operations.
The first initiative involves setting up a 10 Tonnes Per Day biogas plant at the company’s upcoming Kharkhoda facility, which is expected to be commissioned within FY 2026-27. The second involves expanding the capacity of the existing biogas plant at its Manesar facility from 0.2 TPD to 0.7 TPD. Both projects are aligned with the government’s ‘Waste-to-Wealth’ mission, the company said.
India pushes for energy self-sufficiency
Maruti Suzuki Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the timing of the biogas investments was particularly meaningful given the current national energy priorities. “The commissioning of our biogas project comes at an appropriate time. It enables us to contribute, in a modest but meaningful way, to the current national priority alongside several other ongoing efforts,” he said, referencing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for reducing dependence on fossil fuels and oil imports.
Takeuchi added that at a time when the world was facing an increasingly uncertain energy markets, such initiatives carried greater significance than ever. The West Asia conflict has pushed global oil prices sharply higher, making India’s push for energy self-sufficiency more urgent and corporate investments in biogas and renewables more timely.
Part of a broadergreen push
The biogas projects are part of a wider set of measures Maruti Suzuki has undertaken to cut fossil fuel consumption, including expansion of solar power capacity across its facilities. The company’s total Rs 925 crore green energy investment commitment through FY 2030-31 reflects a longer-term strategy to integrate renewable energy solutions into its core manufacturing operations and reduce its overall carbon footprint.
