The helicopter, operated by Trans Bharat Aviation, was originally scheduled to reach Dehradun via Guptkashi. However, after receiving instructions to fly directly to Dehradun, pilot Anupama Chaudhary changed the route. While flying over the Chamba-Arakot area, the rear rotor suddenly became entangled in the high-tension line.
Eyewitnesses reported that the helicopter began to twitch violently and descend uncontrollably. Panic spread among the passengers as the aircraft shook in mid-air.
Pilot’s Heroic Action
Despite the frightening situation, pilot Anupama Chaudhary demonstrated remarkable courage and patience. She managed to keep the helicopter under control and made a safe emergency landing in the fields of Satya-Saklana, even though the tail section of the helicopter was damaged. Her quick thinking and presence of mind saved the lives of all six passengers on board.
Passengers and Rescue
The helicopter was carrying: Son Raj Suri, Shriraj Suri, Bhumi Suri, Parth Suri, Himanshi Patel, Nishka. All passengers, along with the pilot, escaped unharmed. After the emergency landing, the Chamba-Satyo police arrived at the scene and began rescue operations. The passengers were later transported safely to Dehradun by road.
Official Statements
Dhanaulti Tehsildar Mohammad Shadab praised the pilot’s bravery, stating that her presence of mind averted a major tragedy. The incident has highlighted both the risks of flying in mountainous terrain and the importance of skilled pilots in ensuring passenger safety.
Safety Concerns
The accident has raised questions about aviation safety during the Char Dham Yatra, where helicopters are frequently used to ferry pilgrims across difficult terrain. Experts emphasize the need for better route planning, strict adherence to safety protocols, regular maintenance checks, and improved coordination with power authorities to avoid such risks.
Wider Impact
The Char Dham Yatra attracts thousands of pilgrims every year, and helicopter services are considered vital for elderly and time-bound devotees. This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges of flying in Uttarakhand’s hilly regions and the need for enhanced safety measures.
