New Delhi: Two India-flagged LPG carriers with 94,000 MT of cooking gas from Gulf are heading towards India, amid escalating conflict in West Asia.
The
two LPG carriers — BW TYR and BW ELM — have safely transited the Strait of Hormuz and are heading towards Indian ports.
According to an official statement, BW TYR is en route to Mumbai and is expected to arrive on March 31, while BW ELM is heading towards New Mangalore and is expected to reach on April 1.
94,000 tonnes of LPG to reach India soon
“Two LPG carriers, BW TYR and BW ELM, carrying a combined LPG cargo of about 94,000 tonnes, have safely transited the region and are moving towards Indian shores,” the petroleum ministry said in a statement. It added that necessary measures have been taken to ensure the safety of Indian vessels and seafarers operating in the region.
Iran has placed a complete chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz shipping route and is only allowing friendly countries’ ships to pass. The strait is a key energy source for much of the world, with around 20 per cent of the global oil supply. The region is also vital for India’s energy needs.
18 Indian-flagged ships still in region
Earlier, four Indian-flagged LPG tankers — Pine Gas, Jag Vasant, MT Shivalik, and MT Nanda Devi — had safely sailed through the strait. All four were carrying LPG.
India is battling its worst LPG crisis in decades as 60 per cent of its supply is met from imports, with most coming from West Asia.
According to reports, a total of 18 Indian-flagged vessels with 485 Indian seafarers remain in the western Persian Gulf region.
