New Delhi: Rajasthan’s only hill station, Mount Abu, is witnessing biting cold as temperatures plunge to levels rarely seen in the region. Over the past
three days, the mercury has dropped steadily, turning the popular tourist town into a winter hotspot that feels closer to Kashmir than the Aravalli’s.
The temperature at the highest peak in Mount Abu, Guru Shikhar, dipped to minus 3 degrees Celsius while Nakki Lake hovered around 1 degree. The sharp chill formed a thin layer of ice across open areas, rooftops and pathways, making early mornings especially harsh for residents.
The intense cold waves have begun to disrupt daily routines. Locals are staying indoors during the early hours, shops are opening late and movement on the streets have also slowed down. The cold winds sweeping through the hills have added to the discomfort, making it feel even colder than the actual readings suggest.
However, tourists are soaking in the experience with many even seen around Nakki Lake and Guru Shikhar, clicking photos and enjoying the rare sight of frozen surfaces and mist-covered landscapes.
Temperature dips across state
The cold wave is not limited to Mount Abu. On Sunday, the minimum temperature in 14 cities across Rajasthan stayed below five degrees Celsius. Fatehpur recorded the lowest at minus 3.4 degrees, followed by Mount Abu and Nagaur at minus 1 degree each. Other cities like Pilani, Sikar, Jhunjhunu and Lunkaransar also reported near-freezing conditions.
As per the weather officials, the snowfall in nearby hilly regions and persistent cold winds are driving the drop in temperatures.
Rajasthan under weather alerts
The India Meteorological Department has issued a cold wave alert for 11 districts of Rajasthan on January 12. These include Alwar, Deeg, Jhalawar, Khairthal-Tijara, Kotputli-Behror, Sikar, Bikaner, Churu, Didwana-Kuchaman, Hanumangarh and Sri Ganganagar. Churu and Didwana-Kuchaman remain under a red alert for severe cold conditions. With no immediate relief expected, residents have been advised to take precautions, especially the elderly and children as Rajasthan braces for another icy spell.
