New Delhi: WhatsApp is testing a new feature that could change how people start conversations. The company is rolling out “guest chats” for some Android
and iOS beta users. This lets people message others even if they do not have a WhatsApp account.
The update, first reported by WABetaInfo, shows WhatsApp is trying to lower the entry barrier. I tried explaining this to a friend who still avoids installing apps. This feels like WhatsApp saying, fine, just click a link and talk.
What are WhatsApp guest chats, and how do they work
Guest chats let users invite someone into a conversation using a secure link. The invited person does not need to install the app.
Here is how it works:
- A user creates a chat invite link from “Invite a friend”
- The link can be shared via SMS, email, or other apps
- The recipient opens it in a browser
- They can choose to download WhatsApp or continue as a guest
If they continue as a guest, the chat opens on WhatsApp Web. The system creates a unique identifier to generate an encryption key. This means chats stay end-to-end encrypted.
WhatsApp notes that “guest chats are secured by end-to-end encryption. WhatsApp cannot see the content of the messages, and only the participants in the conversation can read them.”
WhatsApp Guest Chat: Features, limits, and security risks
Guest chats are designed for basic use. They are not full WhatsApp accounts.
Some key limitations:
- No group chats
- No media sharing like photos, videos, stickers
- No voice or video calls
- Chats expire after 10 days of inactivity
There are also some risks. WhatsApp clearly points out that guests are not verified. If a link is shared carelessly, someone else could join the chat.
Users can still block guests easily, just like blocking a normal contact.
Why this matters for WhatsApp
This move looks like a push to bring in new users without forcing sign-ups. WhatsApp says guest chats “are designed to provide non-users with a seamless introduction to the platform.”
The company is testing this with limited users right now. There is no official date for a wider rollout yet.
