New Delhi: In a huge setback for the Congress party, its Assam unit president and MP Gaurav Gogoi lost the Jorhat Assembly constituency to BJP candidate
Hitendra Nath Goswami in the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections.
According to available trends and reports, Goswami secured approximately 69,439 votes (around 58.7% vote share), defeating Gogoi who polled around 46,257 votes. The victory margin stands at 23,182 votes.
The result is a big setback for Gogoi, who was contesting an Assembly election for the first time after being elected to the Lok Sabha three times. He was also seen as the Congress’s likely chief ministerial face. On the other hand, Hitendra Nath Goswami, a five-time MLA with strong local support, managed to retain the seat.
The BJP-led NDA is set for a clear third straight win, leading or winning in about 87 to 97 seats out of 126. This is well above the majority mark and is likely to bring Himanta Biswa Sarma back as Chief Minister for a third term.
Congress and its allies are trailing far behind, with around 21 to 26 seats. Their campaign on issues like anti-incumbency and legacy politics has not made much impact.
