New Delhi: Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai has stirred fresh excitement around a possible sequel to Taal. The director recently sparked conversation online
by asking if a follow-up to the 1999 musical drama could work today. Now, he has confirmed that the script for Taal 2 is nearly complete.
Speaking about the idea, Ghai shared that audiences have been asking him about a sequel for years. He noted that the film’s emotional energy continues to resonate, even with younger viewers. According to him, the story may appear simple on the surface, but capturing its essence again is far more challenging. He added that the script is almost ready and the team is now considering if this is the right moment to take it forward, emphasising that maintaining the film’s original sincerity remains crucial.
Reflecting on the first film, which featured Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Akshaye Khanna and Anil Kapoor, Ghai pointed out that casting played a major role in its impact. He explained that the freshness of the lead actors at the time brought a natural honesty to their performances, while Kapoor’s established presence added contrast. He admitted that some of his less successful films suffered due to casting decisions, calling it one of the most critical aspects after writing.
Ghai also referred to his earlier social media note, where he described Taal as a story built on emotion rather than conventional drama elements. He questioned if such a narrative could still connect with today’s audience, particularly younger generations.
He also shared that he continues to share a close bond with Khanna, describing their relationship as personal as well as professional, with regular interactions even today.
