New Delhi: As lakhs of devotees gather in Puri for the grand Rath Yatra 2026, the towering wooden chariots carrying Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi
Subhadra once again become the centre of global attention. But beyond the spectacle of the world’s largest chariot festival lies a question that has fascinated devotees, historians and first-time visitors alike for centuries: Why are the idols of Lord Jagannath made of wood when most Hindu temples worship deities carved in stone or cast in metal?
The answer is a remarkable blend of mythology, tribal traditions, ancient scriptures and one of Hinduism’s rarest living rituals. Unlike conventional idols that remain unchanged for centuries, the deities of Puri are believed to embody the cycle of birth, death and rebirth. Their wooden forms are not merely artistic creations; they are considered living manifestations of the divine, periodically renewed through an elaborate ceremony that has remained largely unchanged for generations.
Unique tradition unlike any other Hindu temple
The idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Sudarshan are traditionally carved from sacred neem wood, locally known as Daru. This makes the Jagannath Temple in Puri one of the very few major Hindu shrines where the principal deities are worshipped in wooden form instead of stone or metal.
According to Hindu tradition, neem is considered highly auspicious. The Bhavishya Purana associates neem wood with Lord Vishnu, while Jagannath tradition regards it as spiritually pure, naturally durable and suitable for housing the divine presence.
Ancient belief that the Lord ‘changes His body’
The most significant reason behind the wooden idols is the sacred ritual of Nabakalebara, literally meaning “new body.”
Since wood naturally ages over time, the deities are ceremonially replaced during a special year when the lunar calendar produces an extra month of Ashadha (known as Adhika Ashadha). This generally occurs every 12 to 19 years.
During Nabakalebara, specially selected neem trees are located through a centuries-old religious process. New idols are carved in secrecy by hereditary artisans, after which the mysterious and sacred Brahma Padartha (often referred to in tradition as the divine life element or Daru Brahma) is transferred from the old idols to the new ones in a highly confidential midnight ritual performed only by designated temple servitors. The old wooden idols are then buried within the temple complex at Koili Baikuntha according to ancient temple customs.
For devotees, this ritual symbolises an eternal spiritual truth: while the physical body changes, the divine soul remains eternal.
Sacred search for perfect neem tree
Not every neem tree can become Lord Jagannath.
Before every Nabakalebara, a ceremonial expedition known as Banajaga Yatra is undertaken by temple priests and Daitapati servitors to locate the sacred trees. The search follows strict scriptural guidelines.
Tradition says the tree chosen for Lord Jagannath should possess several auspicious characteristics, including a naturally dark appearance, four principal branches symbolising Lord Vishnu’s four arms, and sacred symbols resembling a conch (Shankha) and discus (Chakra) on the trunk. It is also expected to be situated near a Shiva shrine and at a spiritually significant location described in temple scriptures.
Only after elaborate rituals is the tree felled and transported to Puri for carving.
Tribal roots that shaped Jagannath worship
Historians and scholars widely believe Jagannath worship preserves strong links with Odisha’s indigenous tribal traditions.
Many legends connect Lord Jagannath with the worship of Nilamadhaba, a deity revered by the Sabara (Sora) tribal community before becoming integrated into mainstream Vaishnavism. Even today, the Daitapati servitors – who play a central role during Nabakalebara and Rath Yatra are traditionally regarded as descendants of these tribal worshippers, reflecting the temple’s unique blend of tribal and Vedic traditions.
Even the Rath Yatra chariots are rebuilt every year
The philosophy of renewal extends beyond the deities themselves.
Every year, entirely new wooden chariots are constructed for Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra using traditional methods and prescribed varieties of timber. Remarkably, artisans continue to rely on traditional joinery techniques instead of modern construction practices, preserving a craft passed down through generations.
The wooden idols of Lord Jagannath are far more than a religious curiosity – they represent one of Hinduism’s deepest philosophical ideas. While stone symbolises permanence, wood reminds devotees that every physical form is temporary. Through Nabakalebara, Lord Jagannath demonstrates that bodies may change, but the eternal divine essence remains unchanged.
