According to the Railways, the new service has been introduced to improve the travel experience. Travellers carrying luggage beyond the free allowance
will no longer have to stand in long queues at station luggage booking counters.
Booking additional baggage in advance will also help passengers avoid penalties that are usually imposed by ticket examiners (TTEs) when excess luggage has not been declared before travel.
The online system will also provide details about baggage limits for different travel classes, booking rules and the list of prohibited items, making it easier for passengers to understand the regulations before their journey.
Free luggage limits
Passengers can carry different amounts of free luggage depending on their travel class:
- AC First Class: Up to 70 kg free; maximum booking limit 150 kg
- First Class and AC Two-Tier: Up to 50 kg free; maximum booking limit 100 kg
- AC Three-Tier, AC Three Economy and AC Chair Car: Up to 40 kg free
- Sleeper Class: Up to 40 kg free; maximum booking limit 80 kg
- Second Class: Up to 35 kg free; maximum booking limit 70 kg
Penalty can be avoided
Railway officials said passengers who reserve additional luggage online before travelling can avoid fines for carrying excess baggage without prior booking. The initiative is expected to make luggage management more transparent and reduce inconvenience during train journeys.
