NCW takes Suo Motu action
The NCW has summoned actors Nora Fatehi and Sanjay Dutt, along with lyricist Raqueeb Alam, producer Venkat K Narayana of KVN Group, and choreographer Kiran Kumar. They must appear before the commission on March 24 with relevant documents. The NCW stated, “The National Commission for Women, in exercise of its powers under the NCW Act, 1990, has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports alleging obscenity and vulgarity in the song ‘Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke’.”
The commission noted that the content “prima facie appears to be sexually suggestive, objectionable, and violative of provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, IT Act, and POCSO Act.” It warned, “Failure to appear may invite appropriate action as per law.” This move follows complaints from social media users, civil society, and politicians over the song’s explicit nature.
Song’s lyrics and dance under fire
Directed by Prem, KD: The Devil is a pan-India Kannada film. The song’s opening verse uses double entendres that graphically describe sex, before revealing it’s about a drink and a bottle—likely alcohol. Critics slammed the choreography as objectifying and overly suggestive, with Nora Fatehi as the lead dancer.
Uploaded by Anand Audio in Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada, the Hindi lyrical video was released on Monday but removed by Wednesday amid backlash. The controversy has grown over the days, with many calling it obscene.
Nora Fatehi responds to backlash
Nora Fatehi addressed the uproar on Instagram on Wednesday afternoon. Sharing a video, she captioned, “I would hate for anyone to think I endorse this. Thank you for the backlash because of this pressure; the filmmakers have luckily taken it down.” Her statement distances herself from the content while crediting public outcry for the video’s removal.
The row highlights ongoing debates on item songs in Indian cinema, balancing artistic freedom with decency norms. As the summons date nears, all eyes are on the NCW hearing.
