New Delhi: Yash-starrer Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups is closing in on the Rs 300 crore worldwide mark, but its slowing domestic business means the milestone
is taking longer to arrive than its spectacular opening had suggested. The Geetu Mohandas directorial has grossed Rs 285.20 crore worldwide in five days, leaving it less than Rs 15 crore short of the mark.
Toxic worldwide collection reaches Rs 285.20 crore
Toxic added Rs 23 crore net in India on Day 5, taking its five-day domestic net collection to Rs 214.10 crore. The film recorded 25.3 per cent overall occupancy across 16,241 shows on Sunday.
The overseas market contributed another Rs 2 crore on Day 5. With its cumulative overseas gross now at Rs 29.25 crore, the film’s worldwide gross has reached Rs 285.20 crore.
The Sunday collection represents an 8.5 per cent decline from the Rs 25.15 crore the film earned on Saturday. Interestingly, its occupancy improved marginally from Saturday’s 24.3 per cent to 25.3 per cent on Sunday, although the number of shows has fallen sharply from the 24,579 recorded on Day 1.
Can Toxic overtake Peddi?
While Toxic is approaching the Rs 300 crore milestone, it has yet to catch up with Ram Charan-starrer Peddi. The latter had crossed Rs 315 crore worldwide within its first five days.
Toxic is, however, closing in on Karuppu, starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, which ended its theatrical run at around Rs 304 crore worldwide. A crossing of that figure would put Toxic ahead of the Tamil film’s lifetime total.
The bigger benchmarks remain considerably further away. Border 2 has earned more than Rs 450 crore worldwide in its lifetime, while Dhurandhar 2 has emerged as one of the year’s biggest blockbusters with Rs 1,813 crore worldwide.
Toxic’s Day 1 high followed by steady decline
Toxic’s current trajectory is in sharp contrast with its opening. The film began its theatrical run with Rs 101.10 crore net in India, but collections dropped significantly over the following days.
The mixed response to the gangster drama could now become increasingly important. Sections of the audience have criticised its storyline, violent sequences and portrayal of women, making word of mouth a key factor in determining how strongly the film performs in the coming days.
