New Delhi: Former Indian captain and Pretoria Capitals head coach Sourav Ganguly stole the limelight at the SA20 auction in Johannesburg on Tuesday. Ganguly,
who was present during the auction himself, ensured multiple high-profile signings for his side to make it fully equipped for the upcoming season of the league.
The former Indian player enjoyed an early victory as he won the bidding war for the first player at the mega auction. Going into the auction with undoubtedly the biggest purse, the Pretoria Capitals were successful in signing spinner Keshav Maharaj for R1.7 million. They got involved in a tough battle with the owner of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape Kavya Maran. The franchise also made a firm push for Aiden Markram, who became the first player in the history of the league to cross R10 million mark.
However, they could not succeed in the same as firstly the SunRisers Eastern Cape and then the Durban Super Giants outbid them. He was eventually signed for R14 million with Durban bagging the deal after Ganguly withdrew at R12.4 million. The former BCCI chief however ensured that the team gets a big star by securing the services of Brevis.
Brevis bought by Capitals for record-breaking fee
The 22-year-old cricketer, who plays for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL), was signed by Ganguly for a record-breaking fee of R16.5 million which became the most expensive signing in the SA20 history. The Pretoria Capitals were engaged in fierce bidding war with the Johannesburg Super Kings but the Capitals pushed hard to secure the deal of one of the brightest talents in world cricket.
Brevis secured the record deal after making an impact with his performance as a replacement player for the CSK in IPL 2025. The Super Kings, led by coach Stephen Fleming, were interested in procuring his service for SA20 as well but Capitals stood tall during the auction fight.
After the most expensive signing, Ganguly was asked why the franchise decided to break their bank for Brevis to which he replied that he believes the batter to be a fantastic talent and he plays especially well against spin.
