New Delhi: Three reported AC-linked fires in around three weeks have put home cooling safety back in focus as north India deals with peak summer heat.
The latest case came from Delhi’s Hauz Khas, where a late-night fire linked to a suspected AC blast killed Dhanendra Kumar, retired IAS officer and the first chairman of the Competition Commission of India.
Police said the fire broke out around 11:18 pm on Thursday. Five people, including family members and domestic help, were inside the house at the time. Police teams and fire department staff reached the spot, but Kumar lost his life. His son was injured and is under treatment.
Why do AC blasts happen in summer?
ACs work hardest in May and June. Long running hours, weak wiring, dirty filters and voltage jumps can turn a regular cooling machine into a fire risk.
In Ghaziabad’s Indirapuram, a split AC allegedly exploded inside a high-rise apartment on May 26, causing a major fire on the 15th floor. Earlier this month, nine people died in a Delhi’s Vivek Vihar building fire. The cause was suspected to be an AC blast and a short circuit.
The scariest part is the smoke. Many people in such fires do not die from burns. Toxic smoke spreads fast, mainly at night, when rooms are shut and families are asleep.
Main reasons behind AC fire risk
A dirty filter can block airflow. The compressor then works harder and gets too hot. It is like forcing a bike to climb a hill in the wrong gear for hours. Something will give.
Voltage fluctuation is another common reason. Sudden spikes or drops can damage the compressor and electrical parts. Old wires, loose connections and cracked insulation make things worse.
Refrigerant gas leaks can reduce cooling. The AC then keeps running harder, heats up more and may trigger a fire risk.
How users can cut the risk
- Get the AC serviced before heavy summer use.
- Clean filters regularly.
- Use a proper voltage stabiliser or surge protector.
- Do not run the AC for full days without breaks.
- Watch for hissing sounds, weak cooling, ice on coils or warm air from vents.
Homes and apartments need working smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, open staircases and unlocked terrace exits. An AC cools the room, yes. Safety checks keep the family alive.
