New Delhi: India is all set to launch its first hydrogen-powered train as the project has entered its final stages, reports said. Indian Railways has planned
to operate the train between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana as part of the pilot phase.
The train will be the world’s first longest hydrogen-powered trains on broad gauge. It will be equipped with 10 coaches including two driving power cars and eight passenger coaches. Notably, Germany and China are the two countries which operate hydrogen powered trains, but India’s train will be the longest built for broad gauge.
A Leap in Sustainable Railway Technology
India’s train will have the most powerful hydrogen locomotives – two Driving Power Cars with (1,200 kW each) to deliver 2,400 kW.
Officials are said to have told ET that a 11 kV power supply has been installed so that the plant keeps running without disruptions.
The trial runs are complete and all technical checks are in place. The fare structure is yet to be released. The train’s operational speed has been set at 110 km per hour.
The first Hydrogen train has been manufactured in Metro-style trains. The train will not create much noise and will have facilities including lights, and air-conditioning.
“India is embracing modern, zero-emission technology like the hydrogen powered train. The first train will run between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana and carry up to 2,600 passengers. It will be the most powerful and longest hydrogen train in the world,” Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw had earlier stated.
