OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has put India in the spotlight again, this time for its fast use of AI image generation. According to the shared context, Altman said
users in India have already created more than 1 billion images using ChatGPT Images 2.0, OpenAI’s new image generation tool.
Altman wrote on X, “ChatGPT Images 2.0 loves India. Already more than 1 billion images created there; awesome to see.” The remark shows how quickly Indian users are trying AI image tools for portraits, social media posts, creative edits, work visuals and design ideas. For many young users, this is now becoming as normal as applying a filter on a photo.

India turns into a major AI image market
India has already become one of the most active markets for AI apps, and ChatGPT Images 2.0 appears to be riding that wave. From college students making avatars to small business owners testing posters, the use cases are spreading fast.
The big number also matters for OpenAI’s business in India. A billion image creations suggest that users are no longer just testing AI for fun. Many are using it for daily content, branding, quick design drafts and visual experiments.
What ChatGPT Images 2.0 brings
OpenAI has described ChatGPT Images 2.0 as a major upgrade for visual creation. The company said the model “can take on complex visual tasks and produce precise, immediately usable visuals, with sharper editing, richer layouts, and thinking-level intelligence.”
The model is said to bring improved text rendering, multilingual support and stronger visual reasoning. In basic terms, it can better understand what users ask for and create images that are closer to the prompt.
Users can try styles such as:

They can upload an image for editing, or use the “Describe a New Image” option to create a fresh picture from text.
Why OpenAI is calling it smarter
OpenAI said this is its first image model with thinking capabilities. The company stated, “When a thinking model is selected in ChatGPT, Images 2.0 can search the web for real-time information, create multiple distinct images from one prompt, and double-check its own outputs.”
For India’s creator economy, that could be a big shift. Faster visuals mean faster posts, thumbnails, campaigns and ideas. And yes, probably a few more AI profile photos on LinkedIn too.
