New Delhi: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi received the long-lost driving licence of his grandfather Firoze Gandhi when
he visited his parliamentary constituency Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday.
A local family in Rae Bareli had kept the document safe with themselves for years. They returned it to Rahul Gandhi on the second day of the Congress leader’s tour of his Lok Sabha constituency. Vikas Singh, a member of the organising committee of the Rae Bareli Premier League cricket tournament, handed over the document to Gandhi.
Singh’s father-in-law had found the driving licence several decades ago during a programme in Uttar Pradesh district. “My father-in-law kept it safely and after his death, my mother-in-law continued to preserve it,” Singh said. He said that when his family got to know that Rahul Gandhi was visiting Rae Bareli, they felt it was their responsibility to hand over the licence to him.
Singh said his family preserved the licence for decades, considering the document an “amanat” that needed to be handed back to the Gandhi family at the earliest opportunity.
After receiving his grandfather’s driving licence, Gandhi examined it carefully and immediately shared a photograph of it with his mother, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, through WhatsApp. It was presented to him on stage.
