Washington: Amid ongoing peace talks between Iran and the US in Islamabad, President Donald Trump on Saturday said that several empty oil tankers were
on their way to the United States to load oil and gas. The US President claimed that his country had more oil than the two largest oil economies combined.
“Massive numbers of empty oil tankers, some of the largest anywhere in the World, are heading, right now, to the United States to load up with the best and “sweetest” oil and gas anywhere in the World. We have more oil than the next two largest oil economies combined – and higher quality,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Iran, US delegation in Pakistan for talks
Earlier in the day, US Vice President J D Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf reached Pakistan for high-stakes peace talks, with countries across the globe waiting to see the outcome of these talks. The ongoing tensions in the Middle East not only led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, from where a large number of oil tankers used to pass through before tensions, but also an increase in the global economic crisis.
While Vance is accompanied by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the Ghalibaf-led Iranian delegation consisted of Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Supreme National Defence Council Secretary Ali Akbar Ahmadian, and Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati.
Why do tensions continue despite the ceasefire announcement?
Both sides are in Islamabad, just days before the ceasefire was announced. Tensions, however, continued to remain following Israel’s continued strikes on Lebanon, leading to Iran refusing to open the Strait of Hormuz.
Both delegations were received at the Nur Khan airbase by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and Minister for Interior, Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi.
Earlier, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf shared a photo from inside the plane while on its way to Pakistan. In the photograph, the speaker can be seen standing in front of images of the Minab School students, who were killed in joint airstrikes by the US and Israel.
