Shastri shared a picture on July 31 showing the two Mumbai cricketers smiling outside a brightly lit storefront. While the moment appeared to be a simple reunion, Hitman’s new look quickly became the highlight. Usually recognised by his trademark beard, the 39-year-old looked much younger without it, leading fans to joke that he had gone back in time.

Fans relive Rohit’s early cricket journey
The clean-shaven appearance brought back memories of the Rohit Sharma who first made his mark on the global stage. Many fans were reminded of his 2007 T20 World Cup days when a young Rohit arrived as a fearless 20-year-old talent and played important knocks during India’s title-winning campaign.
The look also took supporters back to his early IPL years with Deccan Chargers, before he became the iconic captain who guided Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles. For many, the beardless Rohit represented the exciting youngster who was still discovering his potential.
The nostalgia was even stronger because the UK has a special connection with his career. The 2013 Champions Trophy in England marked a turning point when MS Dhoni promoted Rohit to open the innings, a move that helped create the modern-day “Hitman” who went on to dominate world cricket.
Rohit and Shastri honour Ajinkya Rahane
The viral picture came on the same day Ajinkya Rahane announced his retirement from international cricket after a 12-year career that included 85 Tests, 90 ODIs and 20 T20Is.
Rohit paid tribute to his former teammate on X, writing, “We’ve shared the dressing room for so many years and I know how much hard work has gone into everything you’ve achieved. Your commitment and professionalism have always set you apart. Congratulations on a wonderful career. Best wishes!”
Shastri, who was India’s head coach during the historic 2020-21 Test series win in Australia under Rahane’s captaincy, also praised the veteran batter.
“One of India’s most committed cricketers who was an integral part of my tenure as coach and gave yeoman service to Mumbai and Indian cricket. Well done Jinks,” Shastri said.
Rahane had later returned to lead Mumbai in domestic cricket and guided the side to a record-extending 42nd Ranji Trophy title in the 2023-24 season, adding another memorable achievement to his career.
