New Delhi: The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is set to make history by surpassing the 95-seat mark in the early counting trends. The UDF is well
on course for its best electoral performance in over two decades.
If the trends turned into results, this would be the strongest performance for UDF since the 2001 Assembly election, when the party secured 99 seats—the highest ever in Kerala elections.
The trends also showed that the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) is heading towards a massive defeat as the party is losing several of its key constituencies.
UDF has made some historic gains by taking over LDF’s strongholds in central and northern Kerala. UDF’s alliance with the Muslim League and its campaign focusing on governance, welfare delivery, and economic concerns notably helped the party to perform better.
LDF’s dominance
After securing the highest-ever seats in 2001, the UDF cut down to 42, and the LDF formed the government. In 2011, UDF returned to power by securing 72 seats, one seat above the majority mark. It was also the closest contest in Kerala’s history.
Since 2011, LDF has regained power in the state by securing 91 seats in the 2016 elections and a record-breaking 99 seats in the 2021 Assembly elections.
UDF was reduced to 41 seats in the last elections, but now, with the current trends, the party is moving towards touching the 100-seat mark. UDF will be back in power after a decade in Kerala with a power-packed performance in the polls.
