Malkangiri: A farmer in Odisha’s Malkangiri district has successfully grown the rare Miyazaki mango, a variety often considered one of the most expensive
in the world. As per a PTI report, farmer Deba Padhiami from Tamasa village cultivated the plant, which is known internationally for fetching prices as high as Rs 3 lakh per kilogram in premium markets.

The Miyazaki mango originates from Japan’s Miyazaki Prefecture and is known as “Taiyo no Tamago,” meaning “Egg of the Sun.” The fruit is prized for its deep reddish-purple colour, rich sweetness and smooth texture. In Japan, select mangoes are auctioned as luxury gifts due to their exclusivity and strict cultivation standards.

According to PTI, Padhiami received the sapling around four years ago from a social worker. After years of care in Odisha’s challenging climate, the tree has now begun bearing fruit, drawing attention from nearby villagers who are visiting the orchard in large numbers.
The unexpected attention has also created concern for the farmer. “I have been guarding the orchard these days. These mangoes are very valuable,” Padhiami said, adding that he now sleeps near the tree to protect it from possible theft.
Despite growing a globally recognised luxury fruit, the farmer remains unsure how to sell these mangoes. He lacks knowledge of pricing, packaging, transport and export channels. While Miyazaki mangoes command high prices abroad, experts note that such valuations depend on certification and branding.
Padhiami continues to protect his orchard, uncertain whether the rare fruit will change his life or remain a remarkable remote village story.
