New Delhi: Former India captain Rohit Sharma said he wants to see India become a powerhouse in world cricket as he opened up on his ultimate dream. Rohit,
who led India to a memorable T20 World Cup triumph in 2024, feels Indian cricket is moving in the right direction amid the team’s domination across all formats.
Rohit has enjoyed a stellar international career, spanning nearly two decades and continues to be a vital cog for India in ODIs. Speaking at the Mumbai Indians’ ESA Day event in Mumbai, the Hitman opened up on India’s incredible success in international cricket across men’s and women’s categories in recent years.
The former India skipper credited the improved cricketing infrastructure in the country for India’s domination on the global stage and said it has been superb to watch the team winning two T20 World Cups, a Women’s World Cup, a U19 World Cup and a Champions Trophy in the last two years.
“I want India to be the powerhouse of world cricket…that is the bottom line as I want India to be the best and cricket is right up there. What we have done in the last three years has been superb to watch. From the 2024 World Cup, Women’s World Cup, U19 World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy and another T20 World Cup. I hope we continue our winning streak,” Rohit said at the event.
Any score doesn’t seem convincing: Rohit on evolution of T20 cricket
Rohit also opened up on the evolution of T20 cricket in recent times. With the batters adapting a more fearless approach in the shortest format, the Hitman, who is currently playing for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2026, admitted that no total seems enough. The former India captain insisted the fearless approach from youngsters has pushed the game to new heights.
“When we started 130-140 was a good score but currently it is difficult. Any score one gets does not seem to be very convincing. That is the story which tells you how the game has gone about through the years,” said Rohit.
“People have become more fearless, open-minded on how they should go about doing things, which is a good sign for the sport, game and league. The players are not afraid to take a step forward rather than being conservative. In the coming years too, that is how it will keep going, it will reach greater heights,” he added.
Rohit has enjoyed a fine season with the bat in the IPL 2026 amid the Mumbai Indians’ struggles. The senior batter has so far scored 263 runs in 8 matches this season at an average of over 40 and a strike rate of 160.79, including two half-centuries. Rohit missed five games for MI due to a hamstring injury before returning to action.
The Hitman will look to end the season on a high in the Mumbai Indians’ final league match against the Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in the IPL 2026 on Sunday.
