Tehran: Amid tensions in the Middle East, Iran on Wednesday said it is reviewing a 14-point proposal of the United States (US) to end the war in the region.
It also said that only those terms that Tehran considers ‘fair’ would be accepted
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said that Iran is working on the proposal before it shares it with Pakistan, the country that is currently acting as a mediator between Iran and the US, as per IRNA.
No final agreement yet
Even as the US expects Iran to respond on several issues within the next two days, no final agreement has been reached yet between the two sides. According to Axiom, the ongoing talks between the two sides are the closest both countries have come since the war started on February 28.
The proposal would establish a 30-day negotiation between the US and Iran for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for ships to transport oil and gas globally. While Iran had closed the waterway at the start of the war, the US also blocked the waterway, saying it would not allow ships giving toll to Iran to pass through.
Among the current points of discussion between Iran and the US, Tehran would be required to suspend its nuclear enrichment, while the US would have to release frozen Iranian funds and lift sanctions. The proposal also includes reciprocal measures involving restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump threatens Iran with more bombing
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened Iran with more bombing Wednesday if Tehran do not open the Strait of Hormuz. Taking to Truth Social, he wrote that war could end soon oil and natural gas shipments could restart, depending on Iran’s accepting an agreement. However, Trump did not share any further details. “If they don’t agree, the bombing starts,” Trump wrote.
