The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a new digital local toll pass system, allowing residents living within 20 kilometres of a toll plaza
to obtain their passes directly through the RajmargYatra mobile application.
The new service removes the need for people to visit toll plaza offices. Eligible users can now complete the entire process on their smartphones and enjoy unlimited travel through their designated toll plaza for a month.
Paperless application process
Previously, applicants had to visit toll offices with documents such as their Aadhaar card and vehicle registration certificate. Under the new system, the RajmargYatra app automatically verifies user details by connecting with DigiLocker and the VAHAN database.
The app also checks whether the applicant’s residence falls within the required 20-kilometre radius using GPS and GIS technology. Once verified, the digital local pass is issued through the app.
Pilot project begins
NHAI has started the service on a pilot basis at the Mundka–Bakkarwala toll plaza on Delhi’s Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). The authority plans to extend the facility to toll plazas across the country in the coming months.
AI-powered travel support
Alongside the digital pass, NHAI has introduced an AI-based virtual assistant called Margmitra within the RajmargYatra app.
The assistant supports 22 Indian languages, including Kannada, and helps users with FASTag recharge, KYC status, refunds and roadside assistance. Travellers can ask questions by typing or using voice commands.
Emergency and complaint services
The app also allows users to report highway issues, including potholes, garbage and encroachments, by uploading photographs. Complaints are forwarded to the concerned department, and users can track their status.
During emergencies or accidents, travellers can contact NHAI’s emergency helpline (1033) through the app to request ambulances or cranes. It also helps users locate nearby fuel stations, toilets, restaurants, hotels and hospitals along their route.
According to NHAI, more than 8 million annual highway passes have already been sold through the app. The RajmargYatra app is available for both Android and iOS users.
