New Delhi: As engineer and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk continues his indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, public attention has largely
shifted to his protest and deteriorating health. Before the recent political changes, Wangchuk was already one of the most highly esteemed innovators in India, developing practical solutions for water shortages, sustainable living and education in the Himalayan region.
Wangchuk, who was born in the region of Ladakh, has been working to solve local problems, using low-cost engineering techniques for more than 30 years, rather than costly technology. His design work includes the creation of artificial glaciers, solar-heated buildings and education reforms that have been emulated by policymakers, environmentalists and researchers around the world.
From remote Ladakh village to mechanical engineer
Sonam Wangchuk was born in 1966 in Ladakh, in Alchi village, where there was no school in his childhood. He did not go to school, as his mother taught him his native language at home, and his father subsequently shifted to the public service, and he continued his studies in Delhi.
He later completed a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Mechanical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar, in 1987. He also developed an interest in sustainable building methods for cold deserts and studied Earthen Architecture at the Craterre School of Architecture in Grenoble (France).
Why Sonam Wangchuk chose education over a conventional career?
Rather than a conventional engineering career, Wangchuk went back to Ladakh to work to enhance the education system.
In 1988, he established the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) along with some students to support those who were facing difficulty in the existing education system. Later, the campus was internationally acclaimed for its “learning by doing” approach, in which students constructed buildings, administered renewable energy systems, and addressed the actual engineering problems encountered in the field.
One of SECMOL’s biggest achievements was Operation New Hope, a collaborative education reform programme involving teachers, local communities and government departments. The project had a remarkably positive impact on the learning outcomes and school dropouts in Ladakh.
Ice Stupa that made Sonam Wangchuk famous
Among Wangchuk’s many innovations, the Ice Stupa remains his best-known contribution. The artificial glacier was developed in 2014 and is in the shape of a cone to store water (surplus in the winter) and slowly release it during the spring when farmers in the Himalayas struggle with water scarcity before the natural glaciers start to melt. This gravity-powered water storage system does not need electricity; instead, it operates using natural freezing temperatures.

Multiple reports and Wangchuk’s own performances suggest that the early ice stupas contained approximately 150,000 litres of water, and later models contained more than 1.5 million litres, which, in turn, provided assistance to thousands of trees and crops. The concept is now being replicated in many parts of the Himalaya and considered a viable climate adaptation example.
HIAL and climate-focused innovation
In 2016, Wangchuk co-founded the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL) to rethink higher education for mountain communities. The institute integrates engineering, entrepreneurship, renewable energy and sustainable architecture into an experiential learning process. Students are not using a textbook that is teaching them but are using real-world environmental issues that impact high-elevation areas.

His team has also designed for him passive solar-heated mud houses that never get cold in the extremely cold winter in Ladakh, without any heating system. These buildings are not only fuel-efficient but are also affordable in remote areas.
Solar-heated tent for Indian Army
Wangchuk’s solar-heated military tent was another innovation that garnered national attention. According to The Better India, the prototype relies on the sun’s energy for heating soldiers during cold nights in the Himalayas by storing thermal energy with insulated walls, without the need for kerosene or electricity. In earlier trials the tent reportedly kept the temperatures at 15 degrees Celsius; outside the tent was just below 14 degrees Celsius.
The lightweight structure is the result of inputs from the Indian Army and the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh, and was later tested in extreme high-altitude conditions. It could not be a complete substitute for all current military shelters, but it does illustrate the potential for using renewable energy to lessen reliance on expensive fuel supply chains in remote border regions.

Why Sonam Wangchuk’s legacy matters beyond the protest
While it has brought Wangchuk back to the national spotlight, it has forgotten his long contribution to sustainable development. Perhaps his biggest accomplishment has been not so much an invention as the ability to solve problems that are difficult but are solved by simple, local resources. Through the creation of the ice stupas and other climate-friendly constructions or education reforms, Wangchuk has demonstrated that innovation works best when it is community-centric, not just about high-tech elements.

With climate adaptation becoming a global priority, many of the ideas developed in Ladakh are now on the radar in other water-stressed and mountainous regions. The lasting impact of his protest will be felt not in the headlines, but by the communities that continue to benefit from solutions built decades ago.
