New Delhi: The West Bengal Legislative Assembly was dissolved on Thursday after the term of the Trinamool Congress government officially came to an end
on May 7. Governor RN Ravi issued the dissolution order under Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution.
According to an official statement issued by the Lok Bhavan, the order came into force with immediate effect in line with constitutional provisions. The TMC government led by Mamata Banerjee had returned to power in 2021.
BJP secures massive victory
The dissolution followed the declaration of results by the Election Commission of India on Monday. The Bharatiya Janata Party won a clear majority in the assembly elections by securing 207 seats in the 294-member House.
The result marked a major setback for the ruling Trinamool Congress, which managed to win only 80 seats. The BJP victory is being seen as one of the biggest political shifts in West Bengal in recent years.
Governor issues official order
The statement issued from the Lok Bhavan said the Governor exercised his constitutional powers under Article 174(2)(b) to dissolve the legislative assembly with effect from May 7, 2026.
“In exercise of the powers conferred upon the Governor under sub-clause (b) of Clause (2) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India, Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal, Shri R. N. Ravi, has issued an Order dissolving the West Bengal Legislative Assembly with effect from 07 May 2026. The Order has come into force in accordance with the constitutional provisions contained under Article 174(2)(b) the Constitution of India,” the statement said.
Mamata Banerjee refuses to resign
After the TMC’s defeat, Mamata Banerjee said shewould not step down from the chief minister’s post voluntarily.
“No question of me resigning, we were defeated not by public mandate but by conspiracy,” Mamata said during a press conference earlier this week.
According to reports, Banerjee also repeated her stand during a closed-door party meeting on Wednesday. She reportedly said, “Let them impose President’s Rule if they want. Let them dismiss me if they want.”
