New Delhi: Opposition parties have intensified their protest against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on Wednesday, a day after several
INDIA Bloc MPs were detained during a march towards the Election Commission’s office in Delhi.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and MPs from several opposition parties gathered for lunch at Sagar Ratna restaurant in Delhi. The meeting was organised by Kharge and came amid growing tensions between the opposition and the Election Commission.
After the lunch, the MPs left the venue in buses. Rahul Gandhi later announced plans for a protest at Jantar Mantar and reiterated his demand that CEC Gyanesh Kumar resign.
Rahul Gandhi accuses PM Modi, Shah of undermining democratic institutions
Addressing supporters, Gandhi alleged that opposition MPs had sought a meeting with the Election Commission but were stopped by Delhi Police. He also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, accusing them of undermining democratic institutions. Gandhi further said he was not afraid of criminal cases, describing potential FIRs as “medals”.
Kharge also maintained that the opposition would continue its campaign. He said the INDIA bloc would not be intimidated and would take its concerns regarding the Election Commission to people across the country.
Congress leader Pawan Khera described the lunch gathering as a political meeting without an immediate protest agenda. He said opposition MPs were not afraid of FIRs and claimed that the participating parties represented a substantial share of the electorate.
Delhi Police registered FIRs against Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra
The latest developments follow a lengthy protest on Tuesday. Delhi Police registered FIRs against Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over allegations linked to unauthorised entry into the Akashvani Bhavan premises and staging a demonstration without permission.
According to Delhi Police, around 250 people were detained during the protest. Most were released shortly afterwards, while Rahul Gandhi and several other opposition leaders were reportedly detained for around two hours before being released after 10 pm.
The opposition has continued to press its allegations against the Election Commission, while the political standoff is expected to remain a major issue in Parliament and public discourse.
