New Delhi: Mercedes-Benz has revealed the facelifted Maybach S-Class in India at an ex-showroom price of Rs 3.35 crore. The luxury limousine is available
exclusively in the S 580e specification. It becomes the first Maybach model in the Indian market to feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Mercedes has allotted only 30 units for the initial batch. The Maybach costs Rs 97 lakh more than the regular S-Class Manufaktur Edition AMG Line, which was introduced in India a while ago. The S 580e is also the brand’s third plug-in hybrid model in the country. It follows the updated S-Class and AMG E 53 Hybrid. Mercedes-Benz says the Maybach makes up about 50 per cent of its S-Class sales in India.
Mercedes-Maybach S 580e powertrain and specifications
One of the big changes to the facelifted Maybach S-Class is the shift to plug-in hybrid power. The outgoing model used a 4.0-litre V8, while the S 580e integrated a 3.0-litre inline-six petrol engine with an electric motor. The petrol engine makes 443 hp and 560 Nm of torque, while the electric motor makes 160 hp and 480 Nm of torque. A 22kWh battery supplies the electrical energy, taking combined system output to 585 hp and 750 Nm of torque. All-wheel drive comes as standard.
Mercedes claims an electric-only range of up to 98km. The car is capable of reaching 140 kph without using the petrol engine. Its claimed WLTP fuel economy stands at 34.48kpl, although efficiency is unlikely to be a major consideration for most Maybach buyers.
The S 580e comes with three driving modes, including Maybach, Electric and Battery Hold. The energy recuperation system can also be adjusted, including a setting that allows one-pedal driving. Charging is supported through an 11kW AC onboard charger, while DC fast charging is available at rates of up to 60kW. Air suspension and rear-wheel steering are included as standard.
Mercedes-Maybach S 580e: Exterior and interior design, features
Mercedes Maybach S-Class comes a few months after the standard saloon’s debut in India
The Maybach comes with some of the same exterior updates brought with the regular S-Class facelift. It also adds several distinctive touches of its own. The front grille is now about 20 per cent larger and features LED illumination, with an illuminated Mercedes star positioned on the bonnet. Maybach-specific vertical grille slats and an illuminated Maybach wordmark above the grille help distinguish the luxury version.
The redesigned headlamps are larger and feature the latest iteration of Mercedes’ Digital Light system, along with three-pointed-star DRLs. Instead of the blue accents seen on the regular S-Class, the Maybach gets rose-gold detailing and Maybach logos within the lighting elements.
The Maybach retains its 180mm additional length over the long-wheelbase S-Class, giving it a particularly stretched profile. The India-spec model sits on 20-inch forged Maybach alloy wheels featuring a counterweighted Mercedes logo that remains upright as the wheels rotate. The Maybach emblem on the D-pillar is illuminated, while the rear lights come with the three-pointed-star LED signature also seen on the facelifted standard S-Class.
Mercedes Maybach S-Class interior is passenger-focused
As with every Maybach, the rear passenger experience is a big focus. The India-spec S 580e comes standard with a four-seat setup, executive rear seats, and a full-length business console.
The Rear Comfort Package Plus adds fold-out tables, wireless charging surfaces, ambient lighting for the rear compartment and temperature-controlled cup holders. The rear seats can recline up to 43 degrees, compared with 38 degrees in the standard S-Class, and feature heating, ventilation and massage functions.
Instead of the tablet-style controller used previously, passengers get two dedicated smartphone-style remotes to operate the various cabin functions. The front cabin largely retains the layout of the regular S-Class. It features the MBUX Superscreen, which integrates the central infotainment display and a passenger screen with a privacy function, while the driver gets a separate 3D display.
Maybach-specific graphics and rose-gold detailing distinguish the cabin from the standard S-Class. Other equipment includes an augmented-reality head-up display, AR navigation, a 31-speaker Burmester 4D surround-sound system and two rear entertainment displays supplied with wireless headphones.
The cabin is finished in Maybach-specific Nappa leather in Crystal White and Silver Grey Pearl. Manufaktur piano-lacquer trim, a Crystal White Nappa leather roof liner and Manufaktur seat-backrest trim further add to the bespoke feel.
