New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off India’s first hydrogen-powered train from Jind in Haryana on Friday, July 17. The train will operate
on the Jind-Sonipat route during its pilot phase, according to information released by the government.
The launch will place India among a small group of countries testing hydrogen-based railway systems. Germany, Japan, China and the United States have worked on similar trains. Hydrogen trains remain uncommon since the technology is still in its early stages and requires special fuel plants, safety systems and trained staff.
Where will India’s first hydrogen train run?
Indian Railways has selected the Jind-Sonipat section for the first operations. The train is expected to make two round trips each day, covering nearly 356 kilometres.
A hydrogen storage and refuelling facility has been built at Jind. The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation has granted the required licence for storing and dispensing compressed hydrogen gas at the site.
The facility includes a hydrogen compression system for refuelling. A standby compressor and spare parts will be kept ready to reduce the risk of disruption during daily operations.
How does a hydrogen train work?
A hydrogen fuel cell produces electricity through a chemical reaction involving hydrogen. Water vapour is released during the process.
The electricity generated by the fuel cells runs the train’s motors. This system can help railways operate trains on routes where full electrification may be difficult or expensive.
For passengers, the experience may feel much like a regular train ride. The biggest change will sit inside the train and at the refuelling station, far away from the usual rush for seats and luggage space.
Safety checks planned at Jind facility
Hydrogen needs careful handling since leaks can pose a serious safety risk. The Jind facility has been fitted with hydrogen leak detectors, flame detectors and monitoring equipment.
The government said the refuelling system will remain under 24-hour watch. Trained and certified workers will handle key operations. Safety sensors will be inspected and cleaned regularly to stop dust from affecting their performance.
Maintenance manuals approved by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation will be provided for the train and the hydrogen plant. Regular safety audits and operating procedures are planned for the proposed maintenance facility at Shakurbasti.
Trained technical staff will travel on the train during its initial operations. Their job will be to track the system, respond to faults and help railway teams understand how the new train performs under real conditions.
The pilot run will offer Indian Railways its first clear look at whether hydrogen trains can work safely and reliably on regular passenger routes.
