Now, a fascinating new study suggests that this contagious behaviour may begin much earlier than expected – even before a baby is born. Researchers studying unborn babies in the womb believe foetuses may react to yawning from another foetus nearby, opening up exciting new discussions about early human behaviour and brain development.
The findings have captured attention across the world because they offer a deeper look into how babies develop social and neurological responses before birth. Do babies really yawn in the womb?
Yawning is not just something that starts after birth; it has been seen in ultrasound images of foetuses from as early as the second trimester. For many years, doctors and scientists debated whether these wide mouth openings were true yawns or simply random mouth movements, but improved ultrasound technology has helped distinguish the two types more clearly.
Studies tracking fetal movements over several weeks show that yawns follow a particular pattern that is different from simple mouth opening and closing. Researchers have also noticed that yawning in the womb seems to be more common earlier in pregnancy and then gradually reduces as the foetal brain matures, suggesting it might be linked to early brain and nervous system development.
New study reveals babies “catching” their mother’s yawns
The recent research looked at whether unborn babies might actually “catch” yawns from their mothers, in the same way that adults catch yawns from people around them. To test this, scientists asked pregnant women in their third trimester to watch videos that showed people yawning, people making other mouth movements, or people with still faces, while a camera recorded the mothers’ faces and an ultrasound machine monitored the foetus’s nose and lips in real time.
Around 64 percent of the mothers yawned at least once while watching the yawning videos, but they hardly yawned at all during the other clips. The striking part was what happened in the womb: just over half of the foetuses yawned when their mothers yawned, usually about 90 seconds later, which falls inside the window scientists use to define contagious yawning in adults. The researchers also found that mothers who yawned more often tended to have babies who yawned more often too, pointing to a strong link between maternal and foetal yawning patterns.
How can a foetus “catch” a yawn without seeing it?
One of the biggest questions this study raises is how an unborn baby can “catch” a yawn when it cannot see or hear what its mother is doing in the usual sense. Although the new findings are exciting, there are still many unanswered questions. The studies so far have involved relatively small groups of pregnant women, so larger and more diverse samples are needed to confirm how common prenatal contagious yawning really is and whether it varies with factors such as gestational age or maternal health.
Researchers also want to understand whether patterns of fetal yawning are linked to outcomes after birth, such as early bonding, sleep patterns or social responsiveness. For now, scientists are careful not to overstate the results, but they agree that the idea of “catching” a yawn before birth opens up a new line of enquiry into the beginnings of human social life.
