Rajpal Yadav case update: Actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail on Thursday (February 5) after a Delhi court ordered his custody in a long-running
cheque bounce case involving nearly Rs 2.5 crore. The surrender followed the Delhi High Court’s rejection of his final request for more time to arrange funds. Notably, the move has effectively closed the door on further relief.
Moments before surrendering, the Bhool Bhulaiyaa actor made an emotional statement that quickly went viral. Quoted by News X, the actor said, “Sir, kya karoon? Mere paas paise nahin hain. Aur koi upaay nahin dikhta… Sir, yahan hum sab akele hain. There are no friends. I have to deal with this crisis on my own.”
What is the case against Rajpal Yadav?
The case dates back to 2010, when Rajpal Yadav borrowed Rs 5 crore from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to finance his directorial venture Ata Pata Laapata. The film failed to perform at the box office, pushing the actor into financial trouble. As repayments stalled, several cheques issued by Rajpal reportedly bounced. This further triggered legal action under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
In April 2018, a Magistrate’s Court convicted Rajpal and his wife, sentencing them to six months’ imprisonment. While the actor challenged the verdict and sought relief through multiple appeals, the matter dragged on for years. During this period, interest and penalties reportedly pushed the outstanding amount to nearly Rs 9 crore.
Rajpal did manage partial repayments over time. In 2025, he paid Rs 75 lakh, offering hope of a settlement. However, repeated delays and missed deadlines tested the court’s patience. Judicial observations pointed to a “lack of seriousness” in resolving the dispute, despite multiple opportunities granted earlier.
On February 4, 2026, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma dismissed Rajpal Yadav’s final plea seeking a one-week extension to arrange funds. The court made it clear that repeated leniency could not continue, regardless of the accused’s public standing. It directed the actor to surrender immediately, paving the way for Thursday’s development.
