New Delhi: India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Saturday, September 12, bringing extensive traffic restrictions and diversions
across the national capital.
Several foreign dignitaries and world leaders are scheduled to visit Bharat Mandapam. In view of the high-security movement, the Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory stating that regulated traffic movement and diversions will be in place between 9:30 am and 9 pm.
Commuters have been advised to plan their journeys in advance, leave early and preferably use public transport, particularly the Delhi Metro. Emergency and essential-service vehicles will be given priority during the security arrangements.
The capital has been placed on high alert for the two-day summit. Around 15,000 Delhi Police personnel and 200 companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed. More than 500 CCTV cameras are also being used, including systems equipped with facial recognition and automatic number plate recognition.
Roads affected by BRICS Summit traffic restrictions
Traffic will not be stopped across Delhi throughout the day. However, vehicles may face temporary restrictions or diversions whenever security convoys pass through sensitive routes.
More than 35 roads are expected to be affected. These include Sardar Patel Marg, Mother Teresa Crescent, Teen Murti Marg, Akbar Road, Tees January Marg, Rajesh Pilot Marg, Mathura Road, Moti Lal Nehru Marg, Dr Zakir Hussain Marg, Africa Avenue Road, Satya Marg, Shanti Path, Janpath, Ashoka Road, Barakhamba Road, Tolstoy Marg, Niti Marg, Panchsheel Marg, APJ Abdul Kalam Road, Press Enclave Road and Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, among others.
Delhi traffic diversions: key points
The Delhi Traffic Police has identified 22 diversion points to manage traffic during the summit.
At Dr Dinesh Nandini Dalmia Chowk, movement on Mathura Road and Tilak Marg will be restricted. Vehicles from East and South Delhi will be diverted towards IP Marg through BSZ Marg, while traffic from Central, North and West Delhi will be routed towards Delhi Gate.
At Ram Charan Aggarwal Chowk, commercial vehicles moving beyond the chowk towards W-Point will be restricted. Traffic from East and South Delhi will be routed through IP Marg, while vehicles from New Delhi and Connaught Place will be diverted via DDU Marg.
Traffic towards C-Hexagon will also face restrictions at Kasturba Gandhi Marg and Janpath in Connaught Place. Commuters will be diverted towards other arterial roads.
At Patel Chowk, traffic towards Windsor Place and the RBI on Sansad Marg will be restricted, with vehicles diverted via Ashoka Road.
Restrictions will also be imposed around RML Hospital, Moti Bagh Flyover, Lodhi Road, Neela Gumbad, Oberoi Flyover, Ring Road-Bhairon Road and Mandi House.
Commuters travelling towards IGI Airport and Gurugram have been advised to use alternative routes, including NH-48, depending on traffic conditions.
