New Delhi: The INDIA bloc is set to meet in New Delhi on June 8, nearly a month after the Assembly election results in four states and one Union Territory.
The meeting is expected to focus on the opposition’s strategy against the policies and actions of the Central government, with 23 parties likely to attend.
The meeting comes at a sensitive time for the opposition grouping. The BJP’s growing political dominance, the DMK’s decision to stay away and uncertainty around some allies have made the Delhi meeting more than just another coordination exercise. Congress says INDIA bloc remains united
Ahead of the meeting, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the opposition alliance remains united, even as some parties have chosen not to attend for their own reasons. According to reports, the meeting will be held at the Constitution Club in the national capital.
Ramesh, in a post on X, said the parties have strongly opposed “those policies and actions of the Modi government that are stripping millions of Indians of their right to vote, attacking the Constitution daily, targeting opposition leaders through investigative agencies, causing serious harm to the livelihoods of crores of Indians, continuously disrupting household budgets through relentless inflation, betraying the hopes and aspirations of lakhs of youth, weakening the investment climate, and compromising national interests through their foreign policy.”
He added, “Like India, INDIA Janbandhan stands united with its diversity.”
Who is expected to attend
Parties expected at the meeting include Congress, TMC, SP, CPM, CPI, IUML, Kerala Congress, RSP, NC, NCP, Shiv Sena, VCK, MDMK, RJD, CPIML and PDP. JMM is yet to confirm its representative, as a Rajya Sabha nomination is scheduled in the state.
Mamata Banerjee left for Delhi on Sunday to attend the meeting, with TMC leaders Dola Sen and Kalyan Banerjee also present at the Kolkata airport, according to the given context.
DMK to skip, TVK not invited
The DMK has decided not to attend the meeting after tensions with the Congress in Tamil Nadu. The friction began after Congress supported TVK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay following the Assembly polls.
TVK will also not attend the opposition meeting. According to Congress sources cited in the given context, parties without MPs are not invited since the INDIA bloc meeting is meant for parties with representation in Parliament. TVK is also not yet part of the INDIA bloc.
