New Delhi: Karwa Chauth is incomplete for many women without beautifully decorated hands, bangles, a traditional outfit and, of course, dark mehndi. While
getting the design applied is one part of the ritual, waiting for that deep reddishn brown colour to develop is a different story altogether.
From sitting with their hands wrapped in a shawl to trying the age old clove smoke trick, women often turn to desi nuskhas to get a darker mehndi stain before Karwa Chauth. While the colour largely depends on the quality of the henna, how long it stays on the skin and individual skin chemistry, a few simple steps can help the stain develop better.
Desi hacks to make your mehndi darker for Karwa Chauth 2026
1. Keep mehndi on for as long as possible
One of the most common mistakes is washing off mehndi too soon. Traditionally, women leave it on for several hours, sometimes overnight, depending on the paste and their skin’s comfort.
Once the mehndi has dried, let it stay on for as long as practical. Avoid washing it off with water immediately. Instead, gently scrape away the dried paste with your fingers or a blunt edge.
2. Try desi clove smoke trick
Ask around in an Indian household before Karwa Chauth, and someone will probably suggest the clove trick. The traditional method involves warming a few cloves on a pan and exposing the mehndi-covered palms to the resulting smoke.
However, this hack needs caution. Direct heat and smoke can irritate or burn the skin, so it is safer to skip the practice rather than risk an injury. Keeping your hands comfortably warm without direct heat is a better option.
3. Apply lemon and sugar water carefully
The lemon-and-sugar mixture is another old-school mehndi hack. Some women dab a little of the mixture over dried mehndi to help the paste stay attached to the skin for longer.
But more is not necessarily better. Lemon juice can irritate the skin, particularly if it is sensitive or cracked. If your mehndi artist recommends a suitable aftercare product, follow that advice instead of experimenting with acidic mixtures.
4. Say no to water immediately after removing mehndi
This is one of the simplest tips to follow. Once you scrape off the dried paste, avoid washing your hands straight away. Many women also avoid doing dishes or other water-heavy chores for a while after removing the mehndi.
You can gently rub a little plain, skin-friendly oil over the remaining dry.
