another split? Internal party strife within the AIADMK has intensified to an extent that it is poised to send massive shockwaves through Tamil Nadu politics.
Crushing defeat leads to dissatisfaction
In the wake of the AIADMK’s crushing defeat in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections—where the party managed to win only 47 seats, losing even its status as the principal opposition—dissatisfaction against General Secretary Edappadi Palaniswami has reached a boiling point. Several key leaders lost their election deposits, causing shockwaves within the party ranks. A demand is now gaining momentum among AIADMK functionaries and MLAs that Palaniswami should take moral responsibility and step down from the post of General Secretary.
The Shanmugam faction’s moves
A large faction led by former Minister C.V. Shanmugam has begun operating independently. Secret consultations have been taking place over the past three days at his residence in MRC Nagar, Chennai, with key leaders including former Ministers S.P. Velumani and C. Vijayabaskar participating. Reports indicate that during these meetings, crucial decisions were made regarding the party’s future political stance.
In a major twist, it is reported that 34 AIADMK MLAs have decided to extend their support to the TVK. Letters of support have reportedly been prepared, and legal counsel has confirmed that no complications under the Anti-Defection Law would arise if two-thirds of the members extend their support.
Shanmugam’s rigid stance
C.V. Shanmugam is reportedly attempting to personally meet with TVK leader Vijay, accompanied by support letters from 34 MLAs. Sources reveal that he directly confronted Edappadi Palaniswami, stating: “The right alliances were not formed for the election. Candidates were not provided with adequate funds. The entire responsibility for the party’s defeat lies solely with Edappadi Palaniswami.” He has unequivocally asserted that there will be no change in the decision to extend support to the TVK.
EPS’s efforts to contain the split
The faction led by Edappadi Palaniswami has launched intense efforts to contain these moves. He held urgent consultations with district secretaries at his residence on Greenways Road, where a decision was reportedly made to initiate reconciliation talks with Shanmugam. However, the latter adopted a very rigid stance during negotiations.
Possible new legislative leader
Reports have surfaced regarding efforts to replace the leader of the AIADMK Legislative Assembly party. Given the current political climate, serious efforts are underway to select S.P. Velumani as the new leader. With a power struggle having openly erupted following the electoral defeat, party insiders claim that a significant faction—one that refuses to accept Edappadi Palaniswami’s leadership—has now emerged.
