As Google, OpenAI and the rest of the tech giants roll out AI-powered answers straight into search engines, people are seeing more and more of their search results summarised without having to click through to the site’s homepage, which is fundamentally changing how search results are generated. The trend is altering the existing “relationship” between publishers, readers and search engines.
Google’s recent updates regarding AI-driven Search have further fuelled these concerns. At the I/O 2026 event, the company announced a more conversational version of Search that looks more like a chatbot, such as ChatGPT. Google is looking to replace its blue link-laden page with AI-generated responses, follow-up prompts and personalised recommendations. It’s the “biggest upgrade” in Search in over 20 years, but many publishers are feeling it as a direct threat to web traffic and online visibility.
Small publishers fear a “Google Zero” future
Industry observers have increasingly started using the term “Google Zero” to describe a future where publisher traffic from Google Search collapses entirely. AI Overviews, which have already appeared in numerous Google search results, are making it less necessary for people to visit websites since the answers are provided directly on the search page.
This is very concerning for smaller publishers, independent blogs and niche sites that depend heavily on search traffic for their advertising revenue and growing audience. Readers that don’t follow links are lost to publishers, whether they’re for page views, subscriptions or ad impressions.
The publishing industry is worried about how search engines are becoming more of a closed environment where information is consumed without users going outside the search box. Critics say that this undermines the open internet model, which helped smaller creators to compete with bigger media companies.
Search is becoming more like an AI assistant
Google’s new AI Search mode lets you ask more detailed conversational questions rather than typing out your traditional search query. The company demonstrated these examples, like arranging hiking trips with local restaurants or monitoring product launches of favourite sports stars.
Google says these tools are more convenient and personalised, but critics imply that they alter the nature of “search”. Rather than being a gateway to websites, search engines are becoming more like artificial intelligence assistants that deliver final answers.
The change has also triggered backlash from some users who are tired of AI features being added across every online platform. After Google’s announcements, there were social media grumblings that Search is starting to sound more like ChatGPT than a search engine.
Alternative search engines are gaining attention
The frustrations over AI-powered search have motivated a resurgence of interest in a number of alternative search engines. Users have options to have greater control over AI features and privacy settings through services such as Kagi, DuckDuckGo, Startpage, Brave, and Ecosia.
Some platforms offer the option to turn off AI-generated summaries altogether; others may prioritise being free from ads or privacy settings. Kagi, for instance, has a subscription-based service and no advertising, and DuckDuckGo emphasises minimal user tracking.
Another lightweight alternative called &udm=14 removes Google’s AI Overviews from search results by automatically modifying search queries.
Publishers worry about the future of the open web

However, there are concerns that the use of conversational AI could lead to a more closed-loop internet experience, encouraging users to stick within the walls of large tech platforms rather than visiting independent websites. The defenders of the open web argue that the Internet has been a success and people were able to navigate from news sites, forums, blogs and communities freely using hyperlinks.
Now, publishers are becoming worried that AI-driven responses may further consolidate their focus within a few dominant platforms. For smaller sites, being featured in an AI summary without a direct link back to the original source could lead them to fall out of sight.
The debate also represents a larger cultural change in people’s experience of the Internet in general. For many web users who have been around the block, search engines used to be like a map that would lead you from one part of the Internet to another. Those maps are now being turned into curated conversational AI experiences, and publishers don’t know what’s next.
