New Delhi: Imagine pointing your phone towards a flock of flamingos and instantly knowing the species, migration history, behavioural patterns, and conservation
status – all powered by artificial intelligence. That futuristic birdwatching experience is set to become a reality in Maharashtra, which is preparing to establish India’s first AI-powered bird sanctuary at the iconic Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary (TCFS) in Mumbai. The ambitious project aims to redefine wildlife conservation by combining cutting-edge AI technology with sustainable eco-tourism, while protecting one of India’s most important coastal wetland ecosystems.
₹45-Crore eco-nature park gets government approval
The Maharashtra government has granted administrative approval for a ₹45-crore Eco-Nature Park that will be developed within the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary at Bhandup. The project will be funded through the District Planning Committee’s special fund and is being positioned as a landmark initiative for biodiversity conservation and responsible tourism.
The sanctuary, already a favourite destination for migratory flamingos and birdwatchers, is expected to evolve into an international-standard birding destination with technology-driven monitoring systems and enhanced visitor experiences.
India’s first AI-powered bird sanctuary
The biggest highlight of the project is an AI-powered Bird Detection and Monitoring Centre, the first of its kind in the country.
The system will use artificial intelligence to:
- Automatically detect and identify bird species in real time.
- Monitor bird movement within a 1.5-kilometre radius.
- Generate digital records of migratory and resident bird populations.
- Provide centralised data management with live synchronisation and analytics for researchers and forest officials.
- Help create long-term biodiversity records by tracking changes in species presence over time.
Conservation experts believe AI-assisted monitoring can significantly improve wildlife management by delivering more accurate, continuous data than conventional manual observation methods, while also supporting habitat protection and scientific research.
Designed to protect nature, not disturb it
One of the project’s defining features is its environmentally sensitive design.
According to official project details, the proposed bird park will cover 20.09 hectares, but only 0.35 hectares will be used for physical infrastructure and tourist facilities, ensuring minimal ecological disturbance to the surrounding mangrove ecosystem.
Authorities have planned several nature-focused attractions, including:
- A 2.16-km mangrove nature trail
- Multi-storey bird observation towers
- Viewing decks
- Nature interpretation centre
- Lecture hall for educational programmes
- Butterfly garden
- Boat jetty
- Off-site parking facilities
The Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary is among India’s most ecologically significant wetlands and enjoys recognition as a Ramsar Site, an international designation for wetlands of global importance.
Its mangroves and mudflats provide habitat to an estimated 250 species of native and migratory birds, including the Greater Flamingo and Lesser Flamingo, making it one of Mumbai’s richest biodiversity hotspots. Every winter, thousands of migratory birds transform the creek into a spectacular natural attraction.
Government calls it a landmark conservation project
Following a site inspection, Maharashtra minister Ashish Shelar described the Bhandup Bird Park project as a landmark initiative that will promote environmental conservation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable tourism.
Officials say the integration of AI into wildlife monitoring is expected to strengthen conservation efforts while simultaneously creating a world-class destination for birdwatchers, students, researchers, photographers, and eco-tourists.
The AI-powered bird sanctuary represents more than just a tourism project – it reflects a growing shift towards using advanced technologies to safeguard fragile ecosystems.
