New Delhi: The United States will either secure a strong agreement with Iran or confront the country “another way”, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio as
the US and Iran look to move close to an agreement to end the current war. “We thought we might have some news last night, maybe today. I wouldn’t read too much into it,” Rubio said in New Delhi on Monday.
Strong words from US Secretary of State
Iran and the US have observed a ceasefire since April 8. While it has remained steadfast, except for blockades from both sides in the Strait of Hormuz, both sides have attempted to extend the ambit of the ceasefire and turn it into a larger agreement that might stop the military aggression between Iran and the US-Israel alliance.
Pertaining to this Marco Rubio made these comments while on his Indian tour, where he told reporters that, “We have what I think is a pretty solid thing on the table in terms of their ability to open up the straits, get the straits open.”
This comes just a day after US President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that the US blockade would “remain in full force and effect until an agreement is reached, certified, and signed”. “Both sides must take their time and get it right,” he added.
There was no immediate response from Iran’s government. “We’re either going to have a good agreement, or we’re going to have to deal with it another way. We’d prefer to have a good agreement,” Rubio meanwhile maintained.
The ceasefire between the United States and Iran remains in place for now, but the situation is still tense and uncertain. The temporary truce has significantly reduced direct large-scale fighting but as both sides continue to negotiate the terms of a broader agreement, it is important to remember that the ceasefire is still fragile rather than permanent. Various issues like Iran’s nuclear enrichment program, the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran’s support to various militant groups across the Middle East remain contentious.
