New Delhi: Amid heightened security measures in the national capital for Republic Day celebrations on January 26, Delhi Police personnel will wear a unique
type of AI-enabled glasses in crowded areas around Kartavya Path.
According to reports, the AI-enabled glasses are equipped with a built-in camera and connected to a mobile application. The system is linked to a database of around 65,000 criminals and uses a face recognition system (FRS) to identify suspects in real time.
Glasses developed by Indian tech startup
According to a report by Indian Express, more than a dozen AI-powered glasses have been distributed to personnel. The glasses have been developed by Indian tech startup AznaLens.
If a person matching the database comes into the field of vision of an officer wearing the device, the system will alert the officer. The technology can also identify suspects even if they alter their appearance, using artificial intelligence to match facial features.
“Even if our system has a picture of someone from 1990, the headset will use AI to generate an updated facial image after 35 years and produce a likeness that resembles the person’s current appearance,” Additional Commissioner of Police Devesh Mahla said.
Elaborate security measures in place for R-Day
Another important feature of the glasses is thermal scanning, allowing officers to screen people attending the parade. The technology could further help detect individuals carrying prohibited items, according to reports.
Police said the measures will be part of the elaborate security arrangements that have been put in place in Delhi for January 26.
More than 10,000 police personnel, along with paramilitary forces, commandos and snipers, will be deployed to secure the Republic Day parade. High-tech surveillance cameras will also be used to monitor suspicious activity. Security has been intensified at major railway stations, metro stations, bus terminals, crowded markets and the Indira Gandhi International Airport.
