New Delhi: Google is pushing Search deeper into the age of personalization. The company has announced an expansion of its ‘Personal Intelligence’ feature
into AI Mode, aiming to blend global web results with a user’s own digital context. The move signals Google’s latest effort to make Search feel less generic and more tailored to individual lives.
The update allows AI Mode in Google Search to pull signals from a user’s connected apps, turning everyday searches into context-aware answers. Google says the goal is simple: reduce the need for repeated explanations and deliver results that already understand preferences, plans, and habits.
Personal Intelligence comes to AI Mode
With this rollout, Google is bringing Personal Intelligence directly into AI Mode in Search. Eligible users can now opt in to connect services like Gmail and Google Photos. Once enabled, Search can factor in personal context such as bookings, past purchases, or visual memories to shape responses. The idea is to turn Search into a more intuitive assistant rather than a blank query box.
Smarter recommendations, less effort
Google says the biggest change is how recommendations are made. Instead of broad suggestions, AI Mode can surface options that fit a user’s lifestyle. For example, it may suggest activities for a family trip by referencing hotel bookings and past travel photos, or recommend shopping items based on brands a user already prefers. The company positions this as a “right from the start” experience, without constant follow-up prompts.
Shopping and planning get a boost
Personal Intelligence is also being pitched as a strong upgrade for shopping and travel planning. AI Mode can consider where a user is going, when they are traveling, and what they usually buy. That means coat suggestions that match the destination’s weather, or dining ideas that reflect past tastes. Google says this makes Search feel closer to a personal shopper or trip planner.
Privacy controls stay front and center
Google is stressing that Personal Intelligence is fully optional. Users must manually opt in to connect their apps, and they can disconnect them at any time. The company says AI Mode does not directly train on Gmail inboxes or photo libraries. Instead, training is limited to prompts and responses within AI Mode to improve performance.
Rollout details and availability
The feature is launching as a Labs experiment. It will be available to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers, in English, in the U.S. The rollout excludes Workspace business, enterprise, and education accounts. Eligible users will see an invitation in AI Mode over the coming days, or they can enable it manually through Search personalization settings.
With Personal Intelligence, Google is betting that the future of Search is not just about finding information, but about understanding the person asking for it.
