New Delhi: German authorities have launched a major security investigation after an explosive-laden drone was found near a runway at Leipzig/Halle Airport,
while a DHL cargo aircraft struck an unidentified object shortly after take-off in what officials say may represent a new phase of hybrid threats targeting Europe.
The overnight incident temporarily disrupted airport operations and prompted bomb disposal teams to secure the area. The DHL aircraft later made an unscheduled landing in Hanover after reporting damage sustained during the collision. Investigators are examining whether the two incidents are connected.
‘A new level of danger,’ says German interior minister
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the incident as a major escalation, saying, “The Leipzig drone bomb marks a new level of danger. We are dealing with a professional hybrid threat scenario.” He added that authorities would “use every means available to identify those responsible and protect our critical infrastructure.”
The investigators reportedly believe the operation was not the work of hobbyists but bore the hallmarks of a professionally organised attack. Officials are treating the case as a possible act of sabotage involving critical transport infrastructure.
The drone, reportedly carrying explosives, was discovered close to cargo facilities, while the DHL freighter reported hitting an unidentified airborne object shortly after departure, forcing the precautionary diversion to Hanover.
Probe focuses on possible hybrid warfare
Federal investigators are examining whether the incident forms part of a broader pattern of hybrid attacks targeting European infrastructure. German authorities have in recent years warned of increasing sabotage attempts involving military facilities, logistics hubs and transport networks, amid heightened tensions linked to Russia’s war in Ukraine. No official attribution has yet been made in the case.
Leipzig/Halle Airport serves as one of Europe’s busiest cargo hubs and is a key logistics centre for DHL, making it strategically significant for commercial freight and broader European supply chains. The investigation remains ongoing as forensic teams analyse both the explosive drone and the damaged aircraft.
