Washingotn/Tehran: Explosions were reported across several parts of Iran on Wednesday after the United States launched a new round of military strikes,
further escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
In response to the strikes, Iran’s top joint military command announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes.
US fresh strikes on Iran
Iranian media reported blasts in Sirik, Minab, Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island and Gorgan, while air defence systems were activated in multiple areas. The strikes came shortly after US President Donald Trump and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth warned of intensified military action against Iran.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) later confirmed that American forces had launched additional strikes against multiple targets inside Iran.
“The strikes are in response to Iran’s unwarranted and continued aggression,” CENTCOM said.
Trump’s warning
Hours before the attacks, Trump signalled that further military action was imminent.
“We hit them hard yesterday and we’re going to hit them hard again today,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
“We’re going to be attacking them, attacking them very hard,” he said, while urging Tehran to negotiate. “Sign a deal.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also indicated that a major operation was underway.
“The US will be hitting Iran hard tonight,” Hegseth said, adding that the strikes would target key facilities and send a strong message.
Iran closes Strait of Hormuz
After US strikes, Iran said all vessel traffic, including oil tankers and commercial ships, would be prohibited from passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Authorities warned that any vessel attempting to transit the strait could be targeted.
Iranian media later reported that two “violating ships” were struck by the Revolutionary Guards Navy after allegedly attempting to pass through the area.
