Mumbai: A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced it, the new mobile app called ‘Mumbai One’ has officially been launched. The app designed with
an aim to bring all of Mumbai’s public transport services into one place has been officially launched for public on Thursday. The primary goal of this app is to make everyday travel easier for public transport users.
PM Modi revealed the app during the inaugural ceremony of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) and the last phase of Mumbai Metro Line 3 on Wednesday. He said the app was a step in the direction of “One Nation, One Mobility”. “Now people in Mumbai won’t need to wait in long lines to buy tickets anymore,” he said.
What is Mumbai One app?
‘Mumbai One’ app was created by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to let passengers buy a single QR code-based digital ticket that works on most transport options like the metro, monorail, suburban trains, and city buses. The app was made available for public at 5 am on Thursday. Over 500 people downloaded the app within a few hours of its launch.
The MMRDA also shared that the app is hosted on Google Cloud through a setup that follows Indian government rules (MeitY) and uses Google Kubernetes Engine. It’s built to handle as many as 50 lakh (5 million) transactions each day, and the number of users is expected to rise from 10 lakh (1 million) to 50 lakh (5 million) within the next year.
First unified travel app
This is being called India’s first unified travel app, allowing users to skip using multiple ticketing apps or paper tickets. It combines services from 11 transport systems, including Metro Lines 1, 2A, 3, and 7, Navi Mumbai Metro, Monorail, local trains, and key bus services like BEST, TMT, NMMT, KDMT, and MBMT.
The app supports digital and touch-free payments. It also has a built-in journey planner that helps users find the quickest and most budget-friendly travel routes, and it offers real-time updates on transport services.
