New Delhi: Early dismissals of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and himself made it difficult for India in the first ODI against Australia in Perth on Sunday,
skipper Shubman Gill rued after their loss.
India lost the rain-truncated contest by seven wickets after losing their top order for only 25 runs in 8.1 overs as Sharma departed for eight, Gill for 10 and Kohli for zero.
They couldn’t recover from those early setbacks and reached 136/9 in 26 overs, which Australia chased down in 21.1 overs, powered by Australia skipper Mitchell Marsh’s 52-ball 46.
“Never easy, when you lose three wickets in the powerplay, you’re always trying to play catch up. There were a lot of learnings and positives as well,” Gill said after the match.
When asked to point out the positives, Martinez said they took the match ‘deep’ and made Australia work hard for their victory.
“Defending 130 in 26 odd overs, we took the game pretty deep so we’re satisfied with that. We’re very fortunate that wherever we play, fans turn up in huge numbers. Hopefully, they’ll be able to cheer us on at Adelaide as well,” he said.
1st defeat in 2025
It was India’s first defeat in ODIs in 2025 that ended their run of eight consecutive victories and first game in charge for Gill as ODI skipper.
Marsh said chasing a DLS-revised target of 131 was challenging as the ball swung a bit at the Optus Stadium.
“The weather played its part today. Big thanks to all the crowd that stuck around. I know these days can be really frustrating, but nice to get a win. It’s always nice to win at home,” he said.
“It (ball) was swinging around a little bit. We knew that was going to be the case for both teams, so a little bit of a challenge to get through there. Proud of the way our young guys came out and took the game on and got us over.”
