New Delhi: OpenAI has launched a new generation of AI-based workspace agents for ChatGPT, a significant step towards enterprise automation. According to the
company, these agents have the capability to perform tasks on third-party applications such as Slack, Salesforce, and Google Workspace, which means that teams can offload routine work and workflows to AI.
The action puts OpenAI in direct competition with other competitors such as Anthropic, who have been developing comparable agentic systems such as Claude Code. OpenAI says that these new agents will work on the tasks that need time, context, and follow-through, requiring less human supervision.

The workspace agents are AI systems that are capable of taking commands and performing tasks on their own. As an example, users can delegate such work as code writing, report generation, or workflow management. When deployed, these agents can be used on several tools, and they can do their job even when the user is not present.
These agents run on Codex, unlike previously custom GPTs, thus allowing closer integration with software ecosystems. OpenAI posted news on the feature on X, emphasising that the agents are able to see the progress and organise the actions within apps.
Built for teams and enterprise use
With this launch, OpenAI is evidently aiming at business users. One of the main characteristics is that after the creation of an agent, it can be used in a whole workspace. This provides uniformity in processes and assists teams to adhere to the normative procedures.
The company has also been building its strengths by recruiting talents such as Peter Steinberger, the inventor of OpenClaw, to speed up the pace of development of agentic AI. Although OpenClaw remains an open-source project on its own, its impact can be seen in the direction of OpenAI.
Cloud-based agents that work even when you’re offline
One of the greatest benefits of these workspace agents is that they are cloud-based. This implies that they can go on with their work after a user has logged out or closed his or her device. This model resembles the one used by Anthropic in which agents act without dependence on local machines.
Conversely, locally based applications such as OpenClaw require that the user system be active. The cloud-first architecture at OpenAI is meant to offer sustained automation of business processes.
Free for now, pricing will change soon
ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu and Teacher plans now have workspace agents in a research preview. OpenAI has verified that this preview will be running until May 6, 2026. Thereafter, it will be converted to a credit-based pricing system.
Sam Altman has in the past indicated that OpenAI intends to sell AI-related capabilities as a utility, with users billed for consumption, like the way electricity is billed. This is a part of that larger plan because the company doubles its efforts on the use of AI in enterprises.
