Kolkata: The stock market, banks, commodity market and post office will all be closed today, April 14. Government offices and educational institutions
will be closed too on account of the birth anniversary of B R Ambedkar, the father of the Indian Constitution. He was the chairman of the drafting committee for the Constitution and steered it through the Constituent Assembly, and therefore, has come to be recognised as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution.
Stock market holidays in 2026
According to the calendar of holidays of BSE and NSE, the equity market will be closed on the following days for the rest of this year. There will be no trading on these days. These are as follows:
May 1: Friday on account of Maharashtra Day
May 28: Thursday on account of Bakri Id
June 26: Friday on account of Muharram
Sept 14: Monday on account of Ganesh Chaturthi
Oct 2: Friday on account of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti
Oct 20: Tuesday on account of Dussehra
Nov 10: Tuesday on account of Diwali-Balipratipada
Nov 24: Tuesday on account of Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev
Dec 25: Friday on account of Christmas
It is clear from the above list that public holidays have fallen on nine working days. Apart from these nine, a few holidays have coincided with weekends during which the stock market is closed on all days. Therefore, the market will not be separately closed. These holidays between April 15 and December 31 are August 15, which happens to be a Saturday and Nov 8 is a Sunday when Diwali and Laxmi Puja will be held. Muhurat Trading will be conducted on Nov 8, but it is only for one house and the timing will be communicated later.
Bank holiday
Banks across India will also be closed. This applies to both private and public sector banks. But the holiday will not apply to digital banking which remains operational round the clock. One can expect uninterrupted service from neigbourhood ATMs too. Online services such as NEFT or IMPS will also remain functional. In effect, most banking services will be available to the public through banking personnel will not be working today. That’s the fruits of automation and technology.
