New Delhi: In a major development in Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah may resign on May 28 and is likely to be succeeded by Deputy DK Shivakumar
in the state. Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar were in Delhi on Tuesday for a meeting with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior party leader Rahul Gandhi.
Siddaramaiah may enter the Rajya Sabha
According to News 18, Siddaramaiah has been asked by the party high command to resign from the post and enter the Rajya Sabha with a national responsibility. His son may be appointed as the deputy CM of the state, the report added.
Tuesday’s meeting in the national capital was held amid intense speculation of change in leadership in the state. After the meeting, the Congress had clarified that meeting focused on the upcoming elections in the Rajya Sabha elections. It added that no discussions took place on the leadership issue in the state.
What Congress said earlier in the day?
“Today, the entire discussion was only concentrated on the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections and (Legislative) Council elections of Karnataka. “Whatever speculation you people are doing, that is only speculation, no reality at all. Today we discussed the Rajya Sabha seats and the Council seats of Karnataka,” senior Congress leader KC Venugopal told media persons earlier in the day, as per PTI. He was flanked by Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar.
He also said that candidates of the Rajya Sabha and Council seats of Karnataka, along with those of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. “This is what we have decided today, and nothing else was discussed,” he added. Rejecting the idea that there was any call for leadership change, too said, “It is only a speculation”. Meanwhile, the party may also field Shivakumar’s brother D K Suresh as one of the Rajya Sabha candidates. He had been a former Rajya Sabha member from the state.
