Voting for Bangladesh’s 13th general elections concluded at 4.30 pm (Bangladesh time) on Thursday, February 12, with voter turnout recorded at 47.91% as of 2 pm, the country's Election Commission (EC) Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said.
Five people were detained in connection with a crude bomb blast at a polling station in Munshiganj earlier in the day.
“Although more than 2,000 candidates are contesting the election, only 109 of them are women,” The Daily Star reported.
The poll is being viewed as the country’s first significant contest since 2009, after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League was barred from participating with the Election Commission cancelling its registration.
“Three people, including two Ansar members (personnel of Bangladesh’s auxiliary paramilitary security force) and a child, were injured in a crude bomb explosion at a polling centre in Gopalganj on Thursday morning,” The Daily Star reported. “The blast occurred at around 9:00am at the Reshma International School polling centre in the Nichupara area,” Additional Superintendent of Police Md Sarwar Hossain said, as per the report.
Another crude bomb explosion, followed by a chase, took place at Makhati Gurucharan High School in Munshiganj Sadar at about 10 am, Officer-in-Charge Md Mominul Islam confirmed.
