What is the story about?
France has announced plans to gradually discontinue the use of US-based video conferencing platforms, including Microsoft Teams and Zoom, across its public administration by 2027. The services will be replaced by a homegrown platform called 'Visio', developed domestically.
The move forms part of France's broader push to strengthen digital sovereignty and reduce dependence on foreign technology providers for official communications.
The decision was confirmed by France's Minister of Public Service, David Amiel, in an interview with La Tribune Dimanche.
Amiel said the French government had become "excessively dependent" on overseas video conferencing tools, underlining the importance of ensuring that official discussions, data, and internal communications remain secure and sovereign.
Amiel said ending reliance on foreign platforms at the state level was essential to ensure the security of negotiations and internal exchanges in all situations. The government plans to roll out Visio across the entire public administration within the next two years.
Developed by the Interministerial Digital Agency (DINUM), Visio is being positioned as a "100% French-made" video conferencing solution. Amiel said the platform would strengthen data protection while delivering substantial cost savings, as it would eliminate the millions of euros spent annually on renewing contracts with foreign software providers.
