Trump announced the move in a social media post, describing it as retaliation for Canada's refusal to certify aircraft manufactured by Gulfstream Aerospace, based in Savannah, Georgia. He said the US would respond by decertifying all Canadian aircraft, including those made by Bombardier.
"If, for any reason, this situation is not immediately corrected, I am going to charge Canada a 50% tariff on any and all aircraft sold into the United States of America," Trump said.
The latest threat follows Trump's warning over the weekend that he could impose a 100% tariff on Canadian imports if Ottawa proceeded with a planned trade agreement with China. However, he did not provide a timeline or specifics for implementing the proposed tariffs, particularly as Canada has already concluded the deal.
